SIGIRIYA/DAMBULLA
Sigiriya - According to archaeological excavations Sigiriya and its surroundings had settlements dating back to more than 4000 years. During the 3rd century BC Sigiriya was known to have been used as a monastery and 8 centuries later this rock was occupied by King Kasyappa who constructed his royal palace as a fortress to avoid being invaded by his brother King Moggalana and his army.
This fortress has its entrance built in the shape of 2 gigantic Lion’s paws and stands to a height of 349 metres above sea level. You will see a moat and water gardens some paintings of an apsara, frescoes of maidens and a mirror wall displaying faintly ancient 8th century Brahmi inscriptions on the drip-edged cave wall. The frescoes depict nude paintings of the king's maidens or concubines. There are 18 frescoes that have survived the wrath of the elements so far has has great historical significance and heritage of an ancient era.
Early history of the palace relates to several bitter disputes between the two royal brothers namely King Kasyappa and Moggalana.
Moggalana was the legal heir to the throne but when King Kasyappa illegally took the throne and built the fortress naming it Lion Rock during the period between 477 – 495 A D, Moggalana was forced to escape to India and moved the capital to the central province.
Kasyappa was later killed in battle with his brother’s army. Moggalana destroyed the palace and Sigiriya became a Buddhist monastery once again.
Approximately a thousand years later sometime in the 14th century the monastery was abandoned by the monks. Sigiriya remained hidden in the jungles until it was discovered by European explorers in 1831 and subsequently Jonathan Forbes, a major of the British army discovered Sigiriya on his way from Polonnaruwa.
Later the site became an attraction to historians and archaeologists and major excavations took place in the 1980s. The royal palace, parks and the 1500 years old frescoes seemingly remained intact.
To this day Sigiriya remains a UNESCO declared heritage site and a popular tourist destination.

Dambulla stands as an isolated rock mass 500ft high and a mile around the base. This rock temple dates back to the First Century BC. The caves of Dambulla sheltered the King Walagamba during his 14 years of exile from Anuradhapura. When he regained the throne he built the most magnificent of rock temples in Sri Lanka, at this site. You will see 157 statues and mural paintings.
